Author's work

In most of the best stories of O. Henry, written in the early years of the twentieth century, mainly it appreciates the unexpected and sudden end plot twists at the end of the story. Many stories take place in the city of New York and usually portray ordinary characters as dependents, policemen, waitresses. His best known work, The Four million refers to the number of inhabitants of the city of New York in the early twentieth century, and the fact that each of these inhabitants constituted to O. Henry "a story worthy of being told".These are some of his works.
Some of his works are:
After 20 years.
Is a police effected their rounds along the avenue with a stunning look. That grandeur was not exhibitionism but usual in him, for viewers in short supply. Although it was only 10 pm, the icy wind, with rain aftertaste, they had deserted the streets, or slightly less.
The merry month of May

The tribute success

Hastings Beauchamp Morley was walking slowly and peacefully by Union Square with a look of compassion directed at the hundreds of people who were reclining on park benches. They were a motley collection: men with stolid face, animal and unshaven; women, anxious and self-conscious, crossing and uncrossing his feet hanging them four inches away from the gravel.

Fast food in New York.

New York gastronomy is based on the fast food two key elements of street food are hot dogs and pizza.
You find hot dogs in almost all corners of Manhattan.
The price of a puppy is around 2$.
New York is one of those places where it is very common to see everyone on the street with a large coffee to go, although in summer can be replaced by a smoothie, a great fruit shake with ice.

William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862,in Greensboro, North Carolina. He changed the spelling of his middle name to Sydney in 1898. His parents were Dr. Algernon Sidney Porter (1825–88), a physician, and Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter (1833–65). William's parents had married on April 20, 1858. When William was three, his mother died from tuberculosis, and he and his father moved into the home of his paternal grandmother. As a child, Porter was always reading, everything from classics to dime novels; his favorite works were Lane's translation of One Thousand and One Nights, and Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy.

Porter graduated from his aunt Evelina Maria Porter's elementary school in 1876. He then enrolled at the Lindsey Street High School. His aunt continued to tutor him until he was fifteen. In 1879, he started working in his uncle's drugstore and in 1881, at the age of nineteen, he was licensed as a pharmacist. At the drugstore, he also showed off his natural artistic talents by sketching the townsfolk.

New Yorkers: TILDY'S MOMENT

Characteristics of characters:

  • Mr. Bogle: the owner of the restaurant. He sits at the desk by the door and takes the money. He's an ordinary man, maybe generous, or at least fair with his employees.
  • Aileen: one of the waitress. She's tall, beautiful and full of life. She's also good worker, talkative, but self-interested.
  • Tildy: the other waitress. She's small, fat, not beautiful. She has a grey life, she seems happy, but deep inside she feels unhappy because no one wants her.
  • Mr. Seeders: customer, he's small and thin. He's young maybe a bit insecure. He feels somebody like Aileen would never be interested on him. When he's drunk, he kisses Tildy, but afterwards, he is sorry about it.
  • Other men: customers in general, superficial, they like to flatter only beautiful women.
  • The Voice: comes from the kitchen. We know nothing about he or she.

Review/Article:

Title: New Yorkers-Short Stories: Tildy's Moment
Author: O. Henry
Editorial: Oxford
Collection: Oxford Bookwarms
Number of pages: 56
Short summary: In Bogle's Family Restaurant Aileen and Tildy work. Tildy would like to find somebody to love hair as Aileen has. One day Mr. Seeders, who is drunk, kisses her. She is really happy, but three days later he comes regretful and she becomes very sad.
Characters: Mr. Bogle, Aileen, Tildy, Mr. Seeders, Other men and The Voice.

Personal assessment: In my opinion, this short story describes two opposite characters: the waitress. One is pretty and happy, the other is not pretty and sad. And two opposite : customers-men. Those who are superficial and like pretty women, and the one who likes a woman no mind her appearance. Definitely, it seems to me a good story to consider that it's more important inside each person that physical appearance.

Amnesia:

The amnesia is a disorder of the functioning of the memory , during which the individual is unable to retain or retrieve information stored previously.
The causes of amnesia are organic or functional. Organic causes include damage to the brain caused by disease or trauma , or use of certain drugs (generally sedative ). Functional are psychological factors, such as defense mechanisms. The amnesia posttraumatic hysterical is an example of this factor. The amnesia can also be spontaneous, in the case of transient global amnesia (TGA by its acronym in English) has the highest rate of cases in people between the middle - aged and elderly, particularly males, and usually lasts less than 24 hours

Types of Amnesia:

1. Chronological classification according

• Anterograde  amnesia . New events are not transferred to long - term memory, so the sufferer will not be able to remember anything that happened after the onset of this type of amnesia for more than a small moment. The complement of this is retrograde amnesia

• Retrograde amnesia . No events that occurred before the onset of the disease will be remembered.
These terms are used to categorize symptoms, not to indicate a particular cause of etiology

2. According to its classification Aetiologic

• Post - traumatic amnesia . It is usually caused by a head injury that does not penetrate the skull. It is often transient; the duration of the amnesia is related to the degree of damage. A slight trauma, such as a car accident resulting in only a slight whiplash can cause the occupant not remember the events that occurred just before the accident due to a brief interruption in the transfer mechanism of memory from short to long term.

• Mental Amnesia . It is a psychological trauma caused by a depression usually by some being or object.

• Fugue state is also known as dissociative fugue . It is caused by psychological trauma and is usually temporary.

• Childhood amnesia. (or infantile amnesia). It is the common inability to remember events of our childhood. While Sigmund Freud attributed this to sexual repression, others have theorized that it is due to language development or immature parts of the brain.

• Global amnesia is total memory loss. It can be caused by a defense mechanism which occurs after a traumatic event. The disorder of post-traumatic stress can lead to the return of unwanted traumatic memories spontaneously.

• Post-hypnotic Amnesia occurs when events during hypnosis are forgotten, or where past events can not be recalled.

• Psychogenic amnesia . It is the result of a psychological cause as opposed to direct damage to the brain generated by a head injury, physical trauma or disease is known as organic amnesia.

• Amnesia source . It is a memory disorder in which someone can recall certain information but does not know where or how they obtained it .

• Syndrome of distrust in memory . It is a term invented by the psychologist Gisli Gudjonsson to describe a situation where the person is unable to trust his own memory.

• Medial diencephalic amnesia . Amnesia seen in memory disorders that are associated with lesions of the medial diencephalon. An example of these disorders it is Korsakoff syndrome.

• Summoned Amnesia: excessive intake of alcohol in a very short time, can cause a blocking phenomenon similar to the symptoms of amnesia memory.
